The Burnet High School track and field teams began the 2024 season by competing at the Panther Relays hosted by Liberty Hill High School Feb. 24.

The meet drew Austin Westlake, Cedar Park Vista Ridge, Florence, Fredericksburg. Georgetown High and Leander Glenn.

Burnet’s Victor Aviles, the defending Class 4A 800-meter state champion, took gold in the event, crossing the finish line in just under 2 minutes.

Senior pole vaulters Brayden Hill and Brady Rygaard finished first and second at the meet, while senior jumper Grant Jones took gold in the long jump.

Asah Roy paced the Lady Dawgs by taking bronze in the 3,200 meters in 12:03.12.

Lady Dawgs head coach Crystal Shipley summed up the day for the teams.

“The Lady Dawgs enjoyed the beautiful weather as they had a great start to the season,” she said. “The coaching staff is extremely proud of this group’s work this weekend. This was a great start to our season, even though we were missing several athletes due to conflicts with other competitions. We look forward to a successful season.”
